Blog #1: My Workplace
Tuesday, Oct. 11th
The workplace that I work at is called Developmental Studies Center. What they do there is publish materials (books) for in and out of school time. They have a small business where they are at. The building is divided up into many different sections so not the whole building is contributed to them. My workplace is located in Oakland, CA. It's kind of a big building yet very wide. When walking into the entrance, it's very pretty. Where I work at, the room is calm and quiet sometimes. Everyone is focused and doing their work when needed too. The people who work there is about 55 company wide. The sorts of people who my workplace employs are marketing associates, customer service, executive, administrator assistant..etc. You have to a 4-year college degree and a bachelors degree. The strengths of my workplace is that their organized, I like that the whole business is about helping children learn from the books they create and manage. So far I haven't seen any weaknesses, so overall, where I work, is very good. I seem to enjoy it a lot and it makes me want to actually work there.

Blog #2: My Mentor
Tuesday Oct. 18th
My mentor's name is Janae Brooks. She is the marketing associate for the Developmental Studies Center. Her typical day at work is mostly doing what she does everyday, yet it's a lot of work she states. She answers and makes phone calls who are mostly from or to other schools around the world. How she became interested in her job is because she loved children and loved helping them out.

Blog #3: My Role:
Tuesday Oct. 25th
My main responsibility at my workplace is to do what I am assigned and to be able to finish it. Basically my title is a assistant for my mentor. Types of tasks that I do and end of completing sometimes would be filing, shipping, working on the computer to copy down notes from a photo then typing it into a new document. What I mostly do for the working on the computer one, is that they send me some photos to my e-mail, that shows pictures of sticky notes of peoples opinions and ideas for schools and how teachers or students should act or not act or what could help them to improve in their performance. As I read what they say, I type it into a document then when finished, I send it back to the person who assigned me the job and they send it to the school's principle.
A regular day at my job is actually quite cool and fun. When I first come in, my mentor offers me breakfast if not haven't any and when done, she gives me some tasks to do. The other workers there do as well and it's always no problem to me to help all of them out. It defiantly keeps me busy though. I work on my tasks for maybe about 1-3 hours and then comes lunch. I go with my mentor to get something to eat somewhere, then we come back and eat in the conference room where they have meetings held. After done, I go back to work till it's time to go. The work I do, is actually fun to me defiantly since it's something I never did before.

Blog #4: Project Brainstorm
Tuesday Nov. 1st
Well when my advisor came to visit my workplace, my mentor gave some ideas on what I could do for my project yet ever since then we haven't discussed or talked more about it but when that time finally came, I brought it up but she had some more ideas. One idea that I really liked was making a checklist for a sales event host since she's one herself. I think she goes to schools and gives presentations about the products at her job to get peoples interest. So for the checklist, I have to put much information on. Like what she needs to take with her, wheres the event going to be, how is she going to get there...etc. I know it seems kind of easy but I'm trying my best to think of another idea which I hopes comes to mind. How I came up with this idea, was from my mentor. She goes to many events to show off the products at her workplace and I think the checklist will help her much with organization, time, preparation and so on. The project isn't very exciting. I was hoping it to be. What I will need, is a computer that has word and as much information to the place she will be going to.

Blog #5: Progress on my WLE Project
Tuesday Nov. 8th
Today I went back to work like how I do everyday. It was a bit tiring but I didn't give up. I did a lot of shipping. First I had to finish placing catalogs and stuff that people needed from requests forms and placed them into packaging folders then sealed and labeled them. Then after, I had to take about 70-80 packages upstairs at a time to the printer room to put stamps on each one then had to place them in the mail carts for pick-up. That day I had to use a lot of strength. That day, me and my mentor didn't really discuss the project at all. I kinda forgot to mention it since I was doing so much work that day. I barely took any breaks, but that was my choice. Only lunch though. I didn't accomplish anything yet. I wasn't quite sure what my project was going to be even about.

Blog #6: Leadership Skills
Tuesday Nov. 15th
I guess the leadership skill I am using most is completing projects effectively. The work I had started off with when it was my first day at my workplace seemed pretty easy. Everything was understandable and I knew what I was doing but as more Tuesdays came by it started to get hard. I had A LOT of work to do and it was of course going to last me the whole day to be able to finish it. Like packaging. Even though it was much work, I didn't give up and continued to work. I didn't take much breaks which was my choice so I could finish my job. Over 70 packages are completed and are off to ship. It makes me happy. The leadership skill my mentor uses most is Thinking Critically I think. She's very smart and I hear her on business calls. She's very specific and knows how to solve a problem by brainstorming.

Blog #7: What I learned, Reflection
Tuesday Nov. 22nd
What I have learned about my myself throughout this experience is that I'm very helpful. I'm very very very lazy at home. Also, some things I learned that I can do is mail/ship, file and transcribe. I also learned that I like working in businesses like at my workplace. I never knew it would be fun. Well to me. I didn't really have challenges at my internship. Everyone who I had helped, gave me instructions on how to do whatever I needed to do for them and I understood. Now that I think of it, there were some challenges that I had when I was confused on one thing and didn't know what to do so I went to my mentor and asked. A passion I learned from this experience is that I really love packaging and also working on computers. Some life lessons is that you could learn a lot at work. Things you haven't never done before in your life can be taught to you and I enjoyed that. Another is to be volunteering. My WLE effected the people at my workplace because I helped them finish things that needed to be done and it gave them less stress and less work to do. What I believe now that I didn't before is that it's a lot of work when you have a job. I always thought it was going to be easy when you have a job but it's not. At my workplace, I did much work, and everytime I came there was even more work that I had to do but to me it wasn't much of a problem. Skills that I practiced was making labels and finding products that people requested for. I had to find different catalogs that was at the PARC. (A place where the businesses educational books, catalogs, dvds were all placed at) and place them into packaging folders. Why would I did at my WLE was important was because it was for schools that needed books or catalogs for their students.

Blog #8: Professionalism
Tuesday Nov. 29th
In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to ask family members do they know any places I could go to, to get an internship. After my cousin told me that she found one, my mentor filled out all the permission slips..etc, and gave them back to me to turn them into my advisor. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by seeing what you are interested in and want to work at. Making phone calls to see if they accept internships or if your not doing a internship, see if their open for new employees. As you talk to them, provide information about yourself and your education also what you are good at doing or hope to do better with. As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means you know what you are doing, prepared for anything, be able to communicate greatly with the people your working with. Have a helping hand, dress decent, are in a good mood and doing your work. Being a hard worker.

Blog *9: Life at my WLE
Tuesday Dec. 6th
Today I had helped my mentor with much work. She was feeling very sick and tired that day so I made sure I was doing much work for her and helping her out. What I did was unbox folders and labeled them with peoples addresses then put grade stickers on them. I also did some name tags. There were about over 80 name cards I had to insert in plastic badge holders then stacked them all up. When I was done, I had to put all the name tags in alphabetical order. It wasn't that hard to do. How I have improved as an intern is knowing where stuff is and knowing what to do when people ask me to do a task. My workplace is a great place to work because everyone is kind and helpful. There is much work you have to do but it really isn't that hard. Just have to get used to it.
